The Chaplaincy's main responsibilities are to:

- promote the Gospel
- develop spiritual life
- encourage vocations
- provide regular services in sign language
- provide services for baptisms, weddings and funerals in sign language
- seek and establish religious educational opportunities for deaf children and adults
- offer personal pastoral care in times of need
- encourage and enable deaf and deafblind people to take part in running their church at local and wider levels
- raise deaf awareness in the diocese
- provide sign support where appropriate
- provide sign language support to enable deaf people to share worship in their local parish church or cathedral
